So I’m going to try to write about my journey of losing baby weight and creating a leaner, healthier stronger family and ME. I am approaching the end of my first week eating like a cavewoman. Also known as the Paleo Diet. Though I’m not so sure I’d call it a diet as it is a way of life. Essentially, eating paleo means eating like hunter/gathers did…lean meats, lots of fruits and veggies, and some eggs and nuts. No dairy, no bread, rice etc. I chose this after seeing the dramatic change in body shape of a few friends who started Paleo. Also it just makes sense to be eating mostly fruits and veggies and lean meats. I know for me, cutting down or cutting out breads and sugar help me lose weight. The elimination of dairy I thought would be the hardest though. What finally helped me make this choice was my 2 month old baby’s spit up. Cutting out dairy from the mother’s diet often helps reduce a breastfed baby’s spit-up, so we’ll see how it goes.
Here are my feeling about my first week of Paleo. I’m suprised how much I enjoy it. I see a difference in my body already (we’ll talk pounds tomorrow). My digestive system also seems to be working much better- A HUGE bonus after the havoc a c-section takes on digestion. It takes more work to prepare food and it costs a little more, but I feel so good feeding myself and my family such good things. A few of my favorite foods this week are:
Pecan Encrusted Pork Chops w/ baked apples
Baked Cinnamon Pears
Spinach Salad w/ Rotisserie Chicken, oranges, grapes, walnuts and homemade dressing,
Roasted Turkey
and of course LARA bars
We’re also eating lots of raw carrots, apples, steamed broccoli, cantaloupe, grapes, etc. I think my diet is higher in fruit than most, but since I’m breastfeeding I’m not concerned about the extra carbs from fruit. I’m also seeing a reduction in the amount of spit-up from my 2 month old. She used to spit up EVERY feeding in large quantities. It is still most feedings at this point, but much less (PRAISE THE LORD). Overall, it’s been a good first week…we’ll see if the scale agrees in the morning:)

I like the sound of this diet/way of life! I think it’s very similar to Weight Watcher’s core plan. I’m AWFUL at eating fruits and vegetables. If I don’t watch it CAREFULLY, I can go all day without a single one. Thanks for linking up – and thanks for the reminder to EAT MY VEGGIES (and fruits)!
I’ve never heard of the Paleo diet and liked the foods you listed especially the spinach salad and roasted turkey. I’m hungry! Hee hee!
Keep up the good work and see you next week!
good for you. that sounds great! have you/are you allowed to substitute milk with soy or almond milk?
glad you’re back!
@sarah. No soy allowed on the paleo diet. Almond milk probably has non-paleo sweeteners. I gave up dairy 15 years ago by choice. I simply drank water or fruit juice. I now consider fruit juice to be liquid fructose. Being somewhat fructose intolerant I’ve given it up. I have now started drinking So Delicious’s Coconut kefir plain/original. It is not totally paleo, but close enough for me. I like its sourness. It helps that I gave up sweets decades ago and no longer have any cravings for sweet foods.
There are many benefits of giving up dairy. I see Laura stumbled on one of them. It is the non-paleo food that many people refuse to give up. And they will come up with all sorts of arguments as to why not to.
I have put on the web a fairly concise definition of the diet. I don’t get into the science. I simply define it and list the variations out there.

This being WordPress and not the annoyingly over-engineered blogger/blogspot, I’ll get follow-ups via e-mail.
Don.
Thanks so much Don for your input. Your website has been a great resource for me and I know your definition will be a huge help to anyone wanting more info.
My sister plans to start next week and she has Lupus, so I’m excited to see her results and how she feels eating this way!
I believe that all autoimmune disorders are due to new foods and paleo will help. The big one for her to get out of her diet is gluten. She should never cheat on that one.
Here’s an article my friend Ron Hoggan wrote on Lupus and anti-gliadin antibodies:
